For what seems like the sixth time, I almost caved and bought a Rivendell, but then the Marketplace gods dropped a 1992 Trek 520 into my algo.
Total parts bin / donor bike build with the exception of new tires, front brake pads, and some vintage straddle cable hangers from eBay.
Just because someone will ask:
– 45mm
– Billie bars
– Riv thumbie on a sunrace mount shifting 9 cogs of a 10 speed cassette on a 7 speed hub.
And because no one will ask:
– Peep the knurled barrel adjuster on the suntour rear mech. I’ve never seen that before finding this one in the bin.

Everyone needs a 520 Touring in their life. Q: did you spread open the rear stays to fit the cassette?
Nicely done.
Even has Riv adjacent colors and graphics on it!
I’m perfectly happy with my 26er, but damn if I ain’t tempted to add something to my collection with 700C wheels.
I have an old Schwinn Suburban that still has the obsolete 27″ wheels, and I think it’ll take a 700C conversion without much hassle. I gotta pause on the +1 until I figure out how to get more space. 😂
I miss my ’85 520. My “Frek’d” 614 is wonderful but the 520 had a little magic in it.
