Exciting news for Estonia’s defence forces! On Monday, June 22nd, the Estonian Air Defence Wing received its very first mobile air defence missile system: the IRIS-T SLM.

The special delivery of the German equipment took place at Ämari Air Base, and allows Estonian Defence Forces to engage air threats from greater distances and altitudes than its existing short-range systems.

  1. Sounds great 😊 hopefully NATO allies will also bring short medium and long range mobile air defense batteries and close in range anti drone batteries to the Baltic states so they will have a layered defense

  2. Wonderful to see! And so glad they went with a German company instead of a hostile country like the US/Brazil/Turkey etc, not that all of those even make the same equipment but you get the idea. Important to only buy anything from true allies.

  3. Suprised the German Panzer brigade stationed in Lithuania doesn't have any kind of air defense with them but it looks like it's just tanks and artillery. I mean I guess it's in the name, but given how the war in Ukraine is fought, it seems like an oversight.

  4. Any news about SLX version? That would be another long-range (at least closer to it) apart from only european one that exist as of now (SAMP-T).
SLM is very good system and proved to be reliable in Ukraine, congrats to Estonia!

  5. Ukraine’s war proved that defence systems must be mobile. Lithuania unlike LV and EE has chosen NASAMS short and medium range stationary systems. Not so wise choice.

  6. Good on Estonia to finally getbsomething in mid range. Not super sure why need Iris -T in addition to Nasams, however in missile defense space having multiple different systems makes it much harder for the target to defend against.

  7. What to say… Congrats for geting the best, combat proven and IRL 99,5-100,1% interception capability medium range AA system in the world ! 😎
( Why 100,1 % ? – cause in one moment during checking the stats here in UA, IRIS-T SLMS had really more than 100% interception ratio – every target that was spoted and missile was fired at, was destroyed. And once they later realised, that while shooting down a "leading Kaliber", the explosion cause also destroying the second one in near proximity 😁. So yeah… And one more thing – I bet big time, that DIEHL will train their radars and interceptors to start intercepting some ballistic missiles aswell sooner, than SAMPT. Cause as finaly a few months ago publicly confirmed, they are not cappable to intercept ballistic targets in UA yet. And looking at DIEHL, what and how are they doing, my €€€are on them ! 👍)
