Yesterday I had a fall on the wet tarmac because my back wheel skidded. I fell and banged my elbow and my left thigh; I didn’t think I’d hit my head, although afterwards I had a slight headache which I put down to the adrenaline. But then I realised there was a crack in my helmet on the left side of the back. The helmet is brand new – yesterday was literally the first time I’d used it – and I even paid ninety euros for it. I’m a bit disappointed; it didn’t feel like a serious fall, even though I obviously hit my head. Is it normal for a helmet to crack like that? Can I still use it?

Looks like it did its job, took a fair whack, and now needs retiring.
Yes it is normal for a helmet. Means it absorbed the impact instead of your head. Now it needs to be replaced.
If I’d write the answer I’d like, I would face another 30 days ban, at least.

The helmet is done, it may have saved your life. The foam inside is designed to crush under impact, the crack leaves it significantly compromised and unlikely to save you a 2nd time.
Buy a new one, cut the straps on the old one so nobody can fish it out of the bin and use it.
New helmet is cheaper than a concussion or worse
Buy helmet. Wears helmet. Falls. Helmet does its job keeping head safe. Complain? It did its job, toss it and buy new one. Be glad youre uninjured.
Yes it was a serious fall. That helmet probably saved you from a concussion. Fortunately for you, the helmet saved you from more serious injuries. Unfortunately helmets are designed in such a way, that once they are damaged during an accident, they are not safe to use any more, and should be replaced.
You had a remaining headache and the helmet split, I think you did bump your head quite a bit.
The back and side of your head are more fragile than the front as well.
Many helmet brands give a discount for the next helmet if you broke their helmet in use.
Try to contact the store and the brand.

The helmet should not be used again. You paid €90 to avoid yesterday’s concussion, now it’s time to pay again to avoid the next one. It’s very common to be in a crash and not even know that you’ve hit you head – happened to me too.
I bet you would’ve noticed if you hadn’t been wearing it.

If it was enough to crack your helmet, it was a serious fall. Be thankful it did its job: that crack could have been in your skull instead.

Even if your helmet didn’t crack you should have gotten a new one.
Also; the crack is a good thing, it means the energy from the impact dispersed instead of going directly to your head
If it hadn’t cracked your headache would very likely be a lot worse.

Have you been checked by a medical professional? If you don’t remember hitting your head you should see one. Either your helmet was cracked before (unlikely) or you actually hit it hard enough to lose time. Go see a doctor.
Re the helmet, it has done its job. As others have said, most companies give you a discount on your next one after an accident.
