    Or maybe get a chain guard with a lower profile? From that picture your chainring is barely clearing the frame, a bigger one might not even fit.

  2. Why do you think this is something that needs to be “fixed?”

    That chainstay guard looks like it’s made of plastic, and it’s only lightly brushing your chain. So you’re not losing any power and it’s not wearing down your chain at all.

    Unless it’s noisy, what’s the problem?

  3. If everything is stock I would guess the chain is sagging and needs replacing. Chain checkers are a worthy investment, you should have a new chain ready to go when it gets to .5% and replace it when it gets to 0.75%, you can use a caliper or ruler, should be 1/2 inch between each chain rivet.

    you SURE the chainring is original size? that’s definitely not supposed to be like that so i very much disagree with both get a thinner guard or leave it alone, until you know why it’s like that. chainring looks SUPER close to the chainstay too.

    something is off here.

  5. It’s only touching when the wheel is unsprung, and you are in the smallest cog. This is fairly normal with modern drive trains.

    When you have weight on the bike, the rear wheel is going to move up (sag), and you should have better chain clearance. The chainstay guard will protect the frame from paint chips from occasional contact.

    You likely can’t run a larger chainring – doesn’t look like you have a lot of clearance. The rub should be minimal when you are actually riding. Don’t overthink it.

    You can see it’s almost rubbing when its not even on the smallest cassette cog….seems like it’s just a poor design.

    Looking at the position of the rear axle vs chainstay pivot bolt it’s normal for that bike, even bikes with the pivot and axle at the same point are very close to the stay with modern geometry and drivetrains. If you want to go bigger on the chainring you’ll have to go for a bigger offset which is going to change the chainline so unless you need the bigger ring for cadence/speed reasons I’d just send it as is

    I have a Specialized Epic Evo with a similar (same?) guard and it looks the same as this when I’m not on the bike. That said, an 11-tooth cog is *never* going to allow the chain to ride much above a straight chainstay.

    Suspension sag will take care of this when you’re riding. Chain touching the stay while the bike’s just sitting there is pretty normal on modern full suspension bikes, especially in the smallest cog.
