Hey, so my wife and I are planning a 3-4 day trip around Suwalki and Augustow. We would really love to spend as little time next to cars as possible. And also, would much rather ride in forest tracks or gravel than asphalt or paved roads. And would rather avoid riding through villages if possible.

Right now I have this rough plan put together manually and also using parts of the Wigry loop trail and the canal trail. But obviously this is a pretty rough map based no nothing but what I was able to discern on the map.

Any advice on specific routes, not necessarily even including these two I used, would be appreciated. It's my wife's first multi-day trip so I don't want to force it.

  1. Wigry loop and the road along the canal are your best bets there, but on many stretches (eastern bank of Wigry, along canal) you may expect some car traffic (especially during the holidays) – embrace the washboard and the dust in the air when somebody decides to not to slow down while passing cyclists. Maybe you can try to use car navigation apps to judge on what forest roads there’s car traffic allowed?

You can take a detour and do a mini loop from Okółek towards Giby and Zelwa (and back to the canal) and try to camp somewhere next to the Pomorze and Zelwa lakes. At least few years back, there was just an empty forest with some nice forest service roads, with no traffic allowed.

Suwalski Landscape Park is great (with some roads definitely calling for an XC bike rather than gravel) but that definitely won’t be riding through an empty forest with no cars or settlements.
