Bike has not been ridden in rain often (only a couple times that i got caught on a ride unexpectedly), is stored indoors and hand cleaned often. The non drive side bb is very rusty, which has been slowly happening for months. The drive side bb has no rust. Anybody have a similar issue on a newer canyon? Pretty disappointed to see this on an $11k usd bike.

edit: Not sure what you commenters are defining as "maintenance", but

-as noted in the OP, bike is only stored indoors

-ride only on the road in normal conditions in east TN USA. I did not get much riding in during the winter so no worries with salt or ice.

-do not ride in rain/wet unless I get caught out by a pop up storm which has only happened a couple of times.

-wipe down the frame and wheels with a damp towel using water then wipe dry with another towel about once per month on average

-apply car wax to the frame paint about once a month

-wax the chain every 150-200 miles

Short of tucking it into bed at night and reading it a story, I'm not sure there is much more "maintenance" that one could expect to do for a bike frame.

edit2: only on reddit cycling subs does one get consistently downvoted for providing info that people ask for.

It looks like the coating on the bb came off causing the rust. Take it to a bike store and get it replaced. It’s not a Canyon issue, it’s just maintenance for expensive bike.

I don’t mean to be mean to the OP or anything, but I suspect that the cause is environmental and maintenance (or not enough of it).

There should be no way for that amount of rust to be present on a 1 year old bike, that has been “happening for months”, unless there are other factors at play that we don’t know of. I feel there’s more to this, than what we’ve been appraised of – possibly the climate the bike is in, humidity levels, proximity to salt water, storage conditions and I’m sure there are more possible things that I haven’t listed here.
The bolt on the pre-load collar also has visible corrosion, so it’s not like the issue is isolated to the bottom bracket.

My Aeroad has about 6.5k km on it. I too have been caught in a few rainy rides, although, admittedly, I try to plan around the forecast and will not intentionally take it out when it’s wet outside – I’ll ride a different bike in such case. I also wash and clean it, and service/lube things regularly – I’d say every couple of weeks or so. I never leave it wet – always dry it after washing, and use compressor to blow water out of nooks / areas like crank/bb interfaces, hubs, cassette, derailleurs, gaps above and below headtube, and chain before re-lubing.
There’s not a spec of rust / oxidization / corrosion visible anywhere, well into the second season of riding the bike.

All this to say, I’d be surprised if this was strictly a case of manufacturing defect, that caused so much corrosion, so quick.

  3. Do you think your storage space is very humid? Why im asking is that not only your BB is rusted but also the screw on the adjustment thingy “ dont remember the real name of that”
Might also be some cleaning or wax chemical that is reacting with the metal and causing the rust.

  4. Checking, sounds like that should be a pressfit bottom bracket. Those are supposed to be installed with a layer of grease to prevent moisture from getting in there and causing corrosion. Seems the most likely explanation is someone forgot the grease on one side of your BB.

Damn, was a year round commuter and stored the bike outside in Boston and never had this happen. Even with infrequent clearing off of slush/road salt.

Can’t fathom Tennessee is any worse than where I live now humidity wise. The screw near the BB is also showing similar signs so are you sure you didn’t ride in in road salt once? This is a wild amount of rust in a short period of time.

Even with neglect (not saying you did) this seems like too much rust on that component. Two things I can think of is you rode through some chemicals you didn’t notice or you have some super caustic sweat.

  6. Not sure if a better guess has been warranted before but I’m also curious if sweat is dripping in this area? Whereas on the drive side maybe it’s hitting the chainring and deflecting. Would have to be some serious salty sweat though. I only think this because the bolt on the preload adjuster for the BB is also corroding. That or maybe there’s some sort of additive in the car wax/wash you’re issuing that’s collecting at the bottom most point of the bike and corroding. Best bet is to have a bike shop take it apart and see at this point.

  7. I own a Aeroad CF SLX, 1.5 years old and this same thing happened to me. Mechanic replaced it with a Dura ace bottom bracket and I’m riding again. Guess the Canyon QC is just ass 🤷‍♂️
