It was a stunning sunny morning with perfect cycling weather, so I set off on my Specialized S-Works SL5 Tarmac for a 55-mile round trip from Exeter to the beautiful English Riviera town of Torquay.
The ride started with a smooth run down to Starcross, where I luckily slipped through a fresh road closure just before the workers began. From there I continued through Dawlish Warren and Dawlish, tackling the first big climb of the day out of Dawlish towards Teignmouth. After crossing the bridge into Shaldon, I stopped to admire the entrance to the famous Ness Tunnel and the hidden beach beyond.
I then followed the coastal road with its spectacular views through Babbacombe before dropping down into Torquay. What a sight — bright sunshine, turquoise sea, and that classic English Riviera charm. I spent time soaking up the atmosphere around the marina, pier, and vibrant seafront. Absolutely beautiful!
The return leg took me through Newton Abbot, back through Dawlish and Starcross. By then the road was fully closed, so I enjoyed a different route along the main road back to Exeter. In total, I climbed over 3,500 feet on this ride and loved every single pedal stroke.
If you enjoy scenic coastal cycling adventures, this one’s for you! Hit play and join me on this sunny ride to Torquay.
Torquay is a popular seaside resort town in Devon, southwest England, often called the heart of the English Riviera.
Quick facts:
• Famous for its mild climate, sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and Victorian architecture.
• Major tourist destination with a busy marina, harbour, and attractions like Kents Cavern (prehistoric caves) and connections to Agatha Christie (she was born nearby).
• Part of the Torbay area (along with Paignton and Brixham).
• Known for tourism, water sports, and as a classic British holiday spot.
These observations are what this ride is all about. So hop on, come along, and let’s enjoy another awesome cycling adventure!

What a beautiful video video, I really enjoyed watching, thank you Harvey for sharing.
Lovely video takes me back to when I was a kid with my grand parents in Torquay, love babbacombe as well such a lovely part of the world, thankyou and keep up the great videos me and my family always watch 😁🚴👍
Great video,I sometimes go up to Teignmouth golf course over that bridge in Kingsteignton and it’s one hell of a clime to the top but the views are amazing across the Teign valley ,great fun going down into Chudleigh though
Great route, was expecting you to be on the electric until you showed the Tarmac in Torquay, kudos to you 👍
Thank you, another great view!
what a lovely cycling route great video
Such an engaging video, I just couldn't put it down! Thanks for this Harvey, super excited to try out this route on my long GCSE leave summer
Happy memories of Torquay with my mates in the late 80's. Exeter seems a good base for cycling, not far from some nice coastal rides and not to far from Dartmoor.
Hi Harvey hope your well, Well this video was very enjoyable as it showed me area's i didn't know about, but an area i know very well is Teignmouth and Shaldon village, where i spent my childhood holidays, passing by Ness house and Smugglers tunnel and then up that steep hill to the Torquay road, when you turned left onto the Torquay road a few hundred yards on the right is a holiday home site that years ago was a camping site where my family and i stayed every summer and it's still called Coastview . You were having a great ride that day on your beautiful Tarmac and taking us all along some great lanes, tracks and parts of Torquay that has either changed or i just didn't recognise, so a bit of a mystery tour for me. When you climbed out of Dawlish for the second time i couldn't believe how close that car came by you on one side and another car on it's other side ! Absolutely mad, he or she would have been in big trouble if it had made contact deary deary me, but thank you Harvey for another great video and for sharing, take care 👍👌🏻👋
Hi Harvey stunning ride that mate ☀️🚴stay safe mate 🚴💨💨👍
Great video and thanks for taking us to the coast. You are lucky living so close to the sea. Going through Shaldon brought back memories of staying in a B&B and going through the secret tunnel to the beach.
Great to watch .Had many of holidays all that way lovely places .keep it up really enjoy
