I moved to Chicago’s North Shore about five years ago, where it seems like everyone gets issued a bike when they arrive. Cyclists are everywhere, flying up and down Sheridan Road, Green Bay Road, and through the forest preserves.
About four years ago, I bought a carbon Cannondale gravel bike and have put a lot of miles on it since. It has been a great bike, but it became pretty obvious that when the road bikes roll by, they tend to disappear into the distance. I am under no illusion that I will ever be the fastest rider around, but I would at least like to get dropped a little less if I find myself on a group ride.
Last week I happened to be in Carlsbad, California and stopped by Canyon’s facility. It was not planned. I had absolutely no intention of buying a bike that day. But as a 6’7″, 240 plus pound rider, finding bikes that actually fit is not exactly easy. When I realized they had bikes in my size and I could see them in person, it felt like one of those opportunities you do not pass up.
So a completely unplanned visit turned into a new bike day. I came home with an Endurace CFR. Looking forward to seeing what a proper road bike can do and whether it helps me hang on a little longer with all the speed demons riding around the North Shore.

Just ordered the same bike over the weekend. The Chrome Whisper color is gorgeous.
