  1. I think a bigger thing for pilots than the gauges (which – like dashboard screens in cars – can be made to work with polarized lenses) would be that reflections off of other planes will often be the easiest way to spot them at a distance – and polarized sunglasses will cut that out entirely.

(Honestly, most of the LCD ones are something that should be brought up to the manufacturer – polarized sunglasses are something extremely common, and they always cut the same polarization of light. If that's kept in mind, the screens can be easily made to work with polarized sunglasses with just a little thought during manufacturing.)

  2. The test to see if the glasses are polarized, doesn't work in front of panels with oled technolagy as these panels are self emitting and don't require a polarization filter to produce black collor. Polarized layers usually block light in vertical or horizontal pattern and if you have two polarized filters, one aligned horizontally and the other vertically you block out all light and that's why you can't see most of the screens around at least until everything starts using oled

  3. I read that you should never wear sunglasses at all. Wearing sunglasses actually increases the risk of sunburn. The light needs to reach your eyes; otherwise, your body doesn’t realise it is exposed to the sun, so less vitamin D is produced, leading to more sunburn. Furthermore, cholesterol is needed to produce vitamin D properly, but the modern Western lifestyle tends to lower cholesterol levels. Stay away from sunscreen, full of toxins. The sun is not your enemy, quite the opposite, you need the sun to stay healthy.

  4. Hi Doc, I suffer from Asteroid hyalosis, which in my case darkens my vision. Looking at a blue sky or white surface is like looking through a window screen. Are there any treatments other than draining the vitreous humor? (As suggested by an eye surgeon a few years ago). Or could this just be from aging rods and cones?

  5. The explanation of what polarized light actually is (early on in the video) is complete nonsense. Either explain it without making up nonsense, or just focus on the effects and perception of it, like you do in the rest of the video.

  6. Thanks for adding the note RE those w light sensitivity. I wear sunglasses all day because of this (not migraines). Polarized glasses are my go to – as are Smith Optics. I still have a few pairs from the 90's and they are superior to new shades I have gotten. Granted, they are all glass (not poly) – so that's probably why I use them all the time. Keep up the good work!

  7. Directions not Reflections. Neat little trick to make things sharper without glasses is to pinch four finger together make a thight viewing hole in the middle, pin-hole-effect

  8. I wear non-polarized glasses when I play golf. I feel like polarized glasses make it more difficult reading greens.

I do wear polarized glasses for most everything else.

  9. I'm a pilot and I wear polarized sunglasses. To be honest I've never had an issue. They actually help on approach.

The only thing they aren't so good for is the slant angle during heat haze.

  10. I first noticed how polarized glasses can hinder vision when I went to a gas station and thought the pump was broken. The liquid crystal digits on the pump screen disappeared until I took the glasses off. Otherwise, driving with polarized glasses is a must to avoid glare and dash top reflections on the windshield.

  11. My Dad being the V.P. of Polaroid's Polarizer Division, I have been wearing polarized sunglass lenses both outdoors, driving and well lighted indoors (particularly fluorescent and computer screens) since I was 10 years old.
I am now 73. I attribute these lenses for saving my retinas from harmful UV wavelength light emitted from the sun and CRT and LED screens. I have never had detrimental issues as a results about how I wore polarized eyewear.
The only result is my eyes are very light sensitive giving me the advantage of having great night vision. I even put them on when driving with oncoming headlights or very bright street lighting. Having impact resistant polycarbonate lenses have saved me many from potential eye injuries.
For me the pluses out numbered the very few minuses of wearing the lenses as often as I have for 63 years.
Not only did my Dad run the division of Dr. Edwin Land's first and favorite product thus knowing him well, I too worked for Dr. Land mixing batches of his light sensitive film emulsions as his Senior Chemical Technician, personally making his various personally directed formulas for his testing in his Osborne St. Lab until the bastards moved both Land, my Dad and many others out with their hostile internal takeover. This company made the best optical wear and technical polarizer materials for the aircraft and armament industries. Their Cameras and film products were initially very good, but they did not keep up with innovation without Dr. Land and others
R&D. Instead the goons screwed them and shot themselves in their feet My Dad retired. I left the chemical engineering division for greener pastures. The company went down the shitter.
BTW I do not pilot aircraft so reading gauges is not an issue. 😎

  12. Why don't car and aircraft manufacturers just install their displays rotated 90 degrees? Then their screens would be compatible with polarized sunglasses.
