Most people think the only way across the Tyne, by foot or pedalling, is the bridge or the ferry, but this hidden gem is way cooler. It’s the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnel—complete with Grade II listed rotundas and the longest wooden-step escalators in the world.

If you’re on a bike, you have to use the inclined lifts, but the original 1951 escalators are still there to see. It’s free, it’s 24/7, and the acoustics are incredible. Definitely a must-visit if you’re cycling in the North East!

  1. The Tyne Tunnel. It sounds like a mispronounced 60's Sci-Fi TV program.

On a serious note, to that's a cool piece of engineering. Thanks for sharing.
