Part 1 of a two-part cycling adventure into the stunning County Durham countryside, not Northumberland as i previously thought

I went and met my nephew as we headed out of durham city and into the countryside

With a strong headwind slowing us down from the very start, this ride became more of a test than we expected. But with the promise of fresh coffee, warm homemade apple pie, and one of our favourite cafés waiting at the end, turning back was never an option.

The route took us across remote moorland tracks, through some beautiful countryside, and past fascinating remnants of the county’s railway history. Despite the wind, the views were spectacular, with huge skies, rolling hills, and that wonderful feeling of being miles from anywhere.

Join us as we leave home and begin the 55-mile journey towards well-earned food, coffee, and one of the best slices of apple pie around.

🚴 Distance: 55 miles
🌬️ Conditions: Strong headwind
☕ Goal: Coffee, food & homemade apple pie
📍 County Durham Hills

Part 2 coming soon!

  1. Impressive ride out. I can't do anywhere near those miles. The Durham Cycle Track goes quite near my hoose. I tipped myself out of my chair where you crossed the road at an angle where it is washed out. From the Knitsley end to where the cycle tracks meet I call Bastard Route as it's a slight incline and takes me 6mile for my arms to warm up but that's 5mins downhill from my house 😂
