Yup thought it would last forever but i drastically underestimated the number of bikes i’d be working on lol

  2. I’ve been pushing this off for years by saying “I only need one more” and then paying $5 each at the shop.

  3. I have started recycling and relubricating cables more frequently. Those shits start adding up.

  4. I’ve thought about it! …But this is the kind of thing I prefer to get at the LBS when I need it. I know it isn’t much, but it’s an affordable way for me to support a local business.

  5. Yeah. Housing is probably even a better way of saving. After spending 10 years in a shop (and more time clocked in than not), I kind of gag when I pay retain for cable housing. Like, come on, I know that this costs you like 20 cents a foot, you don’t need to charge me five bucks. The owner would get kind of cranky when I’d mark it way down to get people to let me recable their bikes during a tune up… like, a tuneup isn’t going to fix how shitty your shifting and braking feel, but people balk at adding another 40 dollars or more just for cable housing. I ended up making a package add-on in the computer so that it would be hard to say no. I mean, we’re already taking off the brakes and derailleurs, why gouge them and make the mechanics waste time trying to make old cables feel okay? Dumb. Just… dumb.

ANYWAY! Yes. Get a filebox of SP-41 cable housing.

    Yes!

Bought shift and brake cables in bulk and have a drum each of black and white housing too.

I “flipβ€œ a ton of bikes and am constantly building-up or fixing something for friends or family members.

Having a nice little stash of consumables on hand keeps the costs down and ensures I never need to make unnecessary store runs.

The housing roll is also great so I never waste any by having to cut down precut pieces.

I also bought a huge roll of cable liner forever ago and use that on any exposed cable sections and it makes the bikes get less scratched up from cable rub and keeps the winter mess out better.

  8. i dislike these Shimano sawtooth cables. No amount of lubricant will fix these. Jagwire slick are much more smooth. And you notice it when braking and shifting.

  9. Recently picked up 100 each for myself as well, it sounded like a lot of money up front but holy cow if you break it down per cable the cost savings are tremendous.

Now I just need more bikes.

  10. I thought about it but realized that I have about five bikes in the household, and only a couple of which I work on with any frequency (the rest don’t get ridden enough to need routine maintenance). So it wasn’t worth the money.

Instead, I bought ten of each cable so I don’t have to run to the store if I need one

  11. I let my Co-op store stuff like this for me, no need for a full set of tools when there is community to share them!

  12. I found a clearance deal on Cantilever brake pads. I bought 20 pairs.

Almost every old bike that I buy that has them needs them replaced.

Finally got sick of running out.

Not that, but my LBS offered me a 30m roll of Jagwire red derailleur outside cable for $10 and I jumped on the deal. Now I have to change color schemes on some bikes to go with red.
