What causes a tire to fail like this? I pulled over within 100 yards of it going flat. I was in mild decent when it went flat, slowed gently. Didn't notice the damage, changed TCU tube which bubbled out the side, thought I pinched the tube. Only on the 2nd tube did I notice the tear in the tire. Have maybe 2000 miles on the 32mm tire. It was just in the shop maybe 500 miles ago for a full tune up they didn't suggest replacing it. I didn't hit anything recently, no major potholes. I'm fairly heavy and ride at high pressure 80 to 90 psi.

did you mount the tires yourself or someone else did? 2 most plausible causes of failure you see here.
1. manufacturing defects, rare/unlikely but it does happen.
2. someone carved up tire bead with a sharp tire lever when mounting it. are these the tubeless version or the standard clincher version? conti tubeless gp5000s are a bitch to mount, especially if you don’t get your technique right.
Thanks for jogging my memory. I hit a rock last fall riding at dusk blew out both tubes. Hit was hard enough that I was surprised the rim wasn’t damaged. Easily have put 1000 miles on since not even thinking about it, but it must have compromised the tire in that spot.
Looks like your tires have dry rot. Were the tires in storage for a while and not ridden? This can cause rubber to harden up and be brittle (dry rot).
Notice all the cracking in the rubber? You have dry rotted tires.
