If you live in a city with hills, you know the feeling. A rear motor struggles. A mid-drive motor works with you. The BZEN Monaco runs a Bafang mid-drive with 75 Nm (!!!) of torque, and because the Monaco is surprisingly light for what it offers, that classic-looking city bike turns into something that genuinely flies.
Add a Gates Carbon Belt Drive that needs no oil, no attention, and lasts three times longer than a chain, plus a Shimano Nexus 8-speed internal hub, and you have a drivetrain that simply runs. For years, without much thought.
In this video I test what that feels like day to day, what the combined torque and cadence sensor actually does for the ride, and whether the Monaco at 4,290 euros is the right e-bike for anyone who wants to ride a lot and maintain as little as possible.
