Hi!
I would like to purchase a new road bike for longer weekend rides ( 100/150 km) and I have the following options:
Specialized venge 2014 ultegra r8000
Specialized tarmac SL5 2017 ultegra r8000
Both are priced at £850.
I would appreciate your input.
Thanks

So first of all, that venge is not ultegra R8000. It’s the generation before that: ultegra 6800. It’s an older design and doesn’t have the shadow rear derailleur like on the R8000. Shimano still uses the same technology in 2026 so this is still a very modern groupset. The front derailleur design was also drastically changed from the 6800 to R8000 to offer much better adjustment and shifting quality. It also comes with an FSA crankset so it’s an incomplete groupset.
Easy choice for me is the tarmac. Newer generation, no proprietary seatpost, simpler design and tube shapes, much better groupset. They’re both 11 speed. I’m also a sucker for red and I think that venge looks kinda ugly.
For longer rides I still like the Tarmac the best.
