Hey everyone,
I received my new Canyon Endurace CF 8 Di2 today and noticed a fairly significant mark/damage on one of the seat stays right after unboxing it (see pictures).
To me, it looks like more than just a simple paint chip, but I’m definitely not a carbon expert. Since it’s located on the seat stay, I’m a bit concerned about whether it’s purely cosmetic or if the carbon itself could be affected.
I’ve already contacted Canyon and sent them the photos. Their support team is currently reviewing the case and told me it could take up to 5 business days to get an answer regarding whether the damage is cosmetic or structural.
For now, I’m leaving the bike as it is and won’t assemble or ride it until I hear back from them.
A few questions for those with experience:
Based on the photos, does this look purely cosmetic or potentially structural?
Has anyone received a new carbon bike with similar damage?
If so, how did Canyon handle it?
If Canyon determines it’s only cosmetic, how generous are they typically in situations like this? Have any of you received compensation, store credit, a discount, or some other solution?
Curious to hear your thoughts and experiences.
Thanks!

  1. The safer option here is to ask for a replacement. There may be issues in the future, as it is right underneath you. If it’s a structural problem that bears weight over time, it could simply break, and Canyon may then claim that the bike was not used properly.

That said, this is just my personal opinion. I’m not an expert on carbon fiber, so I could be completely wrong, but I’d rather be cautious in a situation like this. Plus its new 3k euro bike…

Looks cosmetic to me, as if someone wanted to force something into the box.., I would double check everything, especially focus on the handlebar as if I remember it correctly the handlebar is put in the nieghboorhood of the seat stays. They might have damaged it while assembling the box. The shape of the damage and the direction of it shows an impact from top to bottom which means something fell on it or was pushed against it from the top to the bottom (exactly what you do when you load up a box you put the frame in and then everything else from the top of the box to the bottom)

In any case you have 3 options:
    – Send the bike back and order a new one
    – Accept an offer from Canyon (probably in the form of a voucher)
    – Let a carbon specialist repair and paint it while Canyon pays the bill for it

Repaired carbon is normally always stronger than original carbon as they will be adding extra layers on it (that’s the theory)… If I were you, I would send the bike back wait on the refund (it takes just a few days after they receive the bike back) and order a new one. You will sooner or later damage the paint of your bike if you use it a lot, however I’d rather have me damaging it than someone else.. at least it will hurt less emotionally 😃

Even if it is cosmetic, send it back. That is your right and Canyon has to accept it. The bike clearly arrived in a damaged state which is not acceptable.

They should exchange it and give you an additional voucher for the inconvenience.

Really. I was looking at getting a canyon. But the more I see on this sub, the less I think I will.
