You can’t even learn to ride anymore. Ok I am being dramatic, but for years we’ve been told the motorcycle industry needs more young riders.

But what if the real problem isn’t demand? What if its actually the system itself thats got too many barriers?

In this video I investigate the growing motorcycle training crisis in the UK, including:

• Driving test waiting times approaching six months
• Test booking bots reselling slots for hundreds of pounds
• Instructor shortages across the motorcycle training industry
• A CBT course that has remained largely unchanged since 1990
• 77,000 riders renewing their CBT instead of progressing to a full licence
• The major reforms currently being considered by the DVSA

The demand for motorcycling is still there. So the real question is whether the pathway into riding still works and what can be done about it.

  1. Imo CBT renewal is a workaround for people who only want to use a small displacement motocycle for daily commute and such but don't want to go through the hassle of obtaining a full license or are simply too afraid to take another test. Many European countries allow people who already have a B license to ride a 125cc bike with a minimum of training or none at all. In Germany this is called B196 and (since we Germans tend to go a little overboard with regards to regulations) consists of the regular motocycle theory curriculum (4x 90 min) and some practical lessons from a driving school (5x 90 min) but no test is required, just a letter from the driving school. Maybe something similar could get people out of endless CBT renewal loops and free up capacity in driving schools?

  2. For me i passes my test last year i was not gonna do it as the cost is just silly for it really. Plus how easy it is to have a motorbike stolen even with chains if they want it they will get it. But m8s kept going on so I went for it. Failed the part 2 twice cost me 1400 In all

  3. Between October and Jan 2025, I had only about 2-4 weeks wait between Mod 2 bookings in Purley south london, and this was when car bookings were reported as 6 months (26 weeks) wait.

I'm pretty sure car test and motorcycle tests aren't on the same kind of bottleneck but I would be interested to hear if anyone in other parts of the country had 4 months+ wait for a motorcycle test which was down to the test centre (not intructor / bike hire availability).

A shortage of instructors surprises me too as I didn't have much trouble with that, I even had several one-to-one sessions (for the same price), but maybe it was just my centre. Happy to name it on request if anyone else in the surrey area having difficulty finding availability (but the probability of the coincidence seems small).

Anyway there have been a series of changes to car driving tests (the articles are vague about if this applies to motorcycles as well, perhaps someone here knows). On the 31st of March, 12th of May, and most recently on the 9th of June, so I guess we'll need to see how effective these are (early reports suggest they are helping).

Speaking of wait and see, I fully agree on 7:00 wanting to end the CBT cycle (reasoned advocacy otherwise still welcome), and I guess we haven’t heard when they will be announcing their next steps on that following those broad proposals you discussed previously? I wonder if there is a timeline on that or if they'll just let us know when they're ready? Either way I hope to hear more about these changes when they are finalised

  4. It's not effecting the kids on my council estate, no licence, no insurance, 3 up and no helmets. No sign of 'em in the wet or cold….

  5. 300 page government highway infrastructure code of practice document only mentions motorcycles 4 times with no discernible actions. That should tell you everything you need to know about what they think or in most cases don’t think about us.

  6. my local place doesn't have any tests available for foreseeable future, it shouldn't be this convoluted and expensive, thousands of pounds to get a motorcycle licence if even possible while commanding a big expensive boat without any legal speed limits doesn't require any tax, registration, insurance or testing. our gov has made riding a little 125 scooter to work with a passenger on the back very almost impossible and economically unviable – motorbikes/scooters would improve our economy to allow people an option between cycling and driving idk why it has to be taboo in our culture

  7. The system is working as intended, it's the mod 2 system was designed to make riding more difficult and to reduce the amount of bikes on the road.

Thats one of the clearest things from the European debates that brought the system in.

Project zero was pushed by a group that wants motorcycles banned on the road.

  8. I live near one of the DVSA test centres, they are even open now on a Sunday. I have seen they plan to sort out the bot issue, but seems to be for cars not bikes…

  9. I am only 1 minute in, but I can tell you the reason why there's a CBT backlog which is then affecting licensing slots via scalping.

But you would call me racist if I told you, even if it's the truth.

  10. It’s pretty simple, they want us off the road, illiterate, constantly sick, and being driven around in self driving EMF boxes….

Reclaim your life by going into the living… your whole life revolves around your Strawman full capital name, which is for a dead entity, only dead entities have full capital names bet you didn’t know that.

  11. It's preferable to the US where you take two classes learn how to U turn and brake sort of. Sell you only a helmet then they pop you on a 600cc or liter bike if you need a bit more power.
