Hi all,

I’m new to bicycle touring (but not new to camping or biking). I don’t have tonnes of disposable cash and I’m more about perseverance over performance anyway.

So, I just picked up this old Apollo for pennies, I plan on putting some drop bars on it, new tyres and a new chain I just wondered what else you folks thought I should or need to do to get it ready for 3/5 day self sustained tours in the UK.

Thanks.

  1. Have you converted flats to drops before? The reach will be different with drop bars on it, also the different brake levers and shifters still have to be compatible with the brakes & derailleurs, or you need to change those, too.

If you want different hand positions, I’d recommend trying butterfly/ trekking bars, instead, or maybe even just some MTB style bar ends.

Other than that, just make sure everything works, maybe experiment a little with weight distribution, and take a weekend run to test your set-up.
