  1. Queensland just passed laws that ebikes have to drop to 12 kmh around pedestrians. So now runners have to give 1.5m space when overtaking ebikes.

“A woman told the programme: “This is all about cyclists on motorised bicycles, so I should think you would do something about motorised cyclists. Make a rule for them and not for all cyclists.”

If I read it correctly, there is an issue with things that should not be on bike paths. So why not focus on that?

I only ride 20 km/h when I’m sick or tired, or riding with a slower rider. Even on my strida my cruising speed is higher.

  4. If you want cycle commuting to be a realistic alternative to driving, this is silly. Needs to be 20mph at least. Limiting to motorised bikes seems reasonable.

people in this thread calling out the speed limit too low without actually having cycled on that particular stretch

I cycle there often and the street design makes it so you can barely see around the curb. Going more than 20 when you enter that intersection is really dangerous.

Yes it would be silly for 20km/h to be the limit EVERYWHERE but some parts do need that.

Accidents happen quite often (some even cause deaths https://www.ad.nl/houten/vrouw-59-uit-houten-overleden-na-ongeluk-met-andere-fietser~abc26240/ ) so I’d say keep an open mind and come cycle for yourself before judging.

12 mph is basically walking pace on a bike, that’s gonna be rough for anyone commuting any real distance.

When we were in the Netherlands on holiday the locals where riding closer to 20 or faster as most of them have ebikes.
12 is way too slow especially on dedicated cycle ways of which there are a lot.

As a cyclist who does not own a car, I would like a limit of 20/kmh in densely populated areas that do not have physically separate cycle lanes from pedestrians and other traffic. Lower on shared cycle and pedestrian lanes.
