Montpellier doesn’t get the attention of Nice or Aix – and that’s exactly what makes it dangerous to overlook. One of the sunniest cities in mainland France with 2,700 hours of sunshine a year, a vast medieval center, and public transit that’s been completely free for residents since December 2023, this Mediterranean powerhouse is the fastest-growing city in France for a reason. This guide covers everything expats and retirees need to know about moving to Montpellier, France: housing costs, neighborhoods, transit, healthcare, the job market, and the community building a life in the sun.

Montpellier is what happens when a medieval city collides with 80,000 students and 2,700 hours of Mediterranean sun. For expats and retirees researching the best places to live in France, it offers a rare mix – one of Europe’s top cancer research centers, a car-free historic core, the Cévennes and Pyrenees within day-trip range, and beaches a tram ride away – at a cost that still undercuts Provence. If you’re comparing cities in France, planning a move from the US, or looking for a French city that feels alive year-round, this is your guide.

  2. Ah Montpellier . . . thanks Tia, and great job on the first video! As you noted, the city isn't perfect, but that's true of every diverse urban area in France. I could go on and on about this place, but I'll leave that to you. However, I'd emphasize two things: 1) The student population has a BIG impact on everything there, but especially on the housing market. Newly arriving expats will likely need local help finding a rental. That said, those same students keep Montpellier lively in the off-season, which is NOT the case in many of the resort cities in the south. 2) It gets HOT there in the summer! June, July and August frequently see extended stretches over 90°F/32°C, and it's not any cooler on the Med . . . be aware and be careful! ☀🥵😎

  3. FYI : Your pic of "Boutonnet" is actually in the Ecusson again. The one "Beaux-arts" is definitely l'Ecusson again , even from where it is taken. The one for "Mosson" is Ecusson edge, not Mosson that is far in periphery, Your Pic about Figuerolle is "Place de la comedy" the very center and main square place of Ecusson, not Figerolle at all.
Only one big issue : You could have used way better photos that would have been more recent too. Some areas are not even looking like on those pics anymore and are way better looking now, the greenery, the water features. It doesn't give a real view, and not even in the positive way. It's OK when you know, but many people that are going to watch this video have no idea of how Montpellier is. Don't even need to embellish it, it would be already much better with good representative photos of the present Montpellier.

Churches translate, because you are more likely almost the only one to go. 😄🤪

FYI : You have to prononce the "s" in Palavas. If you go in the big hypermarkets around the city for your big food supply, you will have better prices for grocery. Carrefour Lattes for exemple (I think it's the biggest, you will be surprise, because I never seen anything like that in US) but you have others, Leclerc, Auchan, Intermarché, Super U.

In my opinion Nice is very nice (the name doesn't come from nowhere) , but Aix is highly overrated on many levels.

And you are right Montpellier is fully alive all day and most of the night in the very center, except the few rainy days we have, and cafe and restaurant terraces are fully functional almost all year, even in winter during the day.

    Enjoy your life here. 😉🙂

  4. I watched your video again. I have to tell that even if it's not all accurate, it's not bad at all, just want to tell you that I'm not against you, I just clarify some errors that could give a false feeling.
Another comment : 2:14 I have no idea of where it is but it's not Montpellier. Seeing the roof I would says somewhere in the north east maybe, I'm not even sure it's in France actually, because the signs are weird looking…
After more research, it appears that it's in UK 😄😄 No wonder signs are weird… (I know I'm bad. Love you british. No really, I love you I'm not kidding)
6:43 Is not Montpellier France either, it's in US Maryland, so you won't have to travel too fare away for this one. We have many castles and gardens around but not this one.

  5. I visited Montpellier for few days in April 2026. The old town is very nice, but i can't find any cafe, restaurants, or shops in other neighborhoods except the and Port Marianne. Knowing and speaking some French are highly recommended.
