Hey everyone,
I just picked up this Rose bike and the previous owner told me he accidentally broke the bottle cage off.
Looking closely at the lower mounting point on the down tube, there is no rivet nut left inside, it’s just the open hole in the frame. The upper one also have just the hole, on the image is some kind of cover.
The frame is aluminium.
I wanted to ask the experts here:
- Is it safe to just crimp a new rivnut directly into this existing hole?
- Does the frame around the hole look too damaged or stressed to handle a new insert?

If it’s just for a bottle cage i would put another one in but you should decide for yourself
That setup looks *similar* to what bikes had 20 years ago or more, which was a threaded boss welded onto the frame. The cage was attached by two Allen screws which screwed into these bosses.
Nowadays, just to save cost in manufacturing, holes are drilled into the frame and rivnuts installed.
Is there no thread in that hole? What does the hole with the cover on it look like? Was the bottle cage just held on by some sort of plastic clip?
That doesn’t look like a rivnut to me, and I don’t think there ever was a rivnut there. To answer your questions:
1.) If you could find one small enough (it would be too small) you could install it.
2.) No, it’s fine.
