Been eying up Brompton for a while and finally decided to go for a ‘project’ bike. Managed to snag a 1990ish bike for £380. The seller says it has basically been in storage this whole time. Collecting it at the weekend. Fingers crossed it is solid. Any suggestions on what do once it is home? Thanks.

  1. Got one broke on me while riding and suffered concussion. The frame has a flaw around the hinge. Do some research online

Er this was a bad idea they have a habit of snapping at the hinge. You could have got a newer Brompton for only a little more money.

Hi OP, I have a 1997 brompton, so congratulations on buying a problem child, but unlike a problem child they want to be goid, mine has been well ridden, like really well ridden. I’ve not had stiff hinges, I have orginal pins and no flex or any issues with the back of the hinge fillet weld, this is where they can snap, so as long as you check it regularly you’ll be fine, it won’t suddenly castropically fail, if you do see cracks appear, you can take to a fillet welder brazer, and they’ll fix for you. You just need to strip components, and then get powder coated, or spray yourself.

Mine has done commuting, tours, train journeys, car journeys camping, flying, been to pub and carried me home drunk, carried me home sober with my wife stool on the carrier, carried about 20kg on front mount, given a backie to my mate who was drunk as well as me, explored new lands in Denmark, Spain, Netherlands, America, German, France, Norway, Canada and Norfolk
