For context I just (5 minutes ago) purchased this lightly used tarmac sl8 on Facebook. Seller seemed trustworthy, but I noticed at the bottom near bottom serial number, the paint was messed up, I don’t know how to describe it but it’s bundled up and soft to the touch, kinda sagging off of the frame. Has this happened to anyone/ what should I do about it?

There is a bit of other surface residue on the bike and the owner said it’s been sitting for a couple months in the garage. My best guess is that some liquid or corrosive chemical drained through the bottom.

Any insights if you’ve seen this before would be appreciated

Maybe some oils from lubricating parts has soaked into he paint would be my best guess. Came out the drain hole.

  2. It could be water or oil damage.

My guess is that the drain hole got clogged and whatever was in there had time to seep between the paint and the metal.

You’ll have to get that paint off of there to examine the corrosion of the metal below it. (Hopefully there isn’t much.) Use a craft knife and cut around the paint. Try to get the paint chip off in one piece so you can color match it. (If you can’t, bring the bike to get color matched) automotive shoes sell little tubes of touch-up paint. The cheap fix is nail polish.

Once the paint is out of the way scrub the corrosion off with a scrubby. If it’s deep, use a bit of sandpaper.

Once it’s clean (or clean enough) wipe it down with some acetone (nail polish remover) and when it’s dry you can apply the paint. 🎨

Give the area a coat of paint. Once it’s dry and cured for a couple days you can give the bike a waxing. Any decent automotive wax will do.

I doubt the previous owner was even aware of it.

It’s even possible that it came from the factory that way. A little bit of cutting oil from drilling that drain hole 🕳️ might have remained. That would stop the paint from sticking.
