Hi everyone,
I recently switched from a 30T to a 32T chainring on my Canyon Stoic hardtail, and after a few rides I noticed a fairly deep scratch on the frame behind the chainring. The scratch has definitely gone through the paint.
The strange thing is that the chainring itself does not touch the frame at all. I checked the clearance and there are no signs of the chainring rubbing against it while pedaling. It also wasn't making any noise or grinding.
Has anyone experienced something similar after increasing chainring size? Do you think I should switch back to the 30T, or could there be another cause?

That chainring is too big for that bike. Manufacturers will always publish a max chainring size, you should find yours.
Yes, it may not be touching while sitting still or lightly pedaling around, but bikes flex a lot more than people often realize. And that’s what happening here. Under moderate to heavy riding, your chainstay is flexing into your ring.
Frames flex.
I am not sure what you’re expecting anyone to tell you. You have all the data showing you the change in chainring size is causing rub.
You can go back to a smaller ring or look to move your chainring further out / get an offset chainring which may or may not be a good solution.
Did you check if your frame is cleared for 34T by Canyon? Like, maybe ask them?
That 34t chainring is definitely too big. I can’t find anything directly from Canyon’s website regarding the max chainring size, but a quick google search shows multiple sources stating it’s 30t.
Oof yeah I have definitely crammed in a chainring bigger than manufacturer spec before but this one does not clear. Back to the 32t.
That chainring is too big for your frame (unless you’re missing a BB spacer), dirt and crap with keep making it worse until it eventually saws through your frame.
It can also be stones getting stuck between the chainring and frame from time to time.
