That chainring looks SUPER worn…shouldn’t cause that on its own but I’d start by replacing it.

A worn chain or chainring can do this, how old are they?

You need new chainring, it’s toast. that’s why the chain is riding the top of the teeth. need a replacement chain too because this has likely accelerated the wear on your current chain. Check the cassette too, it might just be worth replacing all three.

Most 1 speed chainrings have alternating big and small teeth to help with big/small chain link alignment. Try moving the chain 1 tooth over to see if it fits before buying a new chainring

Test the chain for wear. A worn chain will do this

I think chainring is fine, very square top teeth still

The chain is very worn/stretched way past its useful life. You need to replace it. And since the chainrings have been used with such a worn chain, the chain has likely increased wear on the chainring. That’s because the chain links are slightly further apart, thus they hit the chainring at different points than they should, thus wearing those points prematurely. You’ll need to inspect the chainring carefully to see whether it also needs replacing.

The distance between links in the chain seems to be longer than the distance between teeth in the chainring, so if I had to guess I’d say that’s probably due to a very worn out chain.

That ring is giga worn. Weird wear pattern too where it’s scooped out on the engaging face.

A new bike is good for this.

Get a new SRAM 11 speed chain. Size it so the new chain is the same number of links as the old chain.

Your master link is backwards, did you take it off to clean it or anything?

It is amazing comparing the length of two chains, one worn and one new and see how much longer the used chain is.

Heavily worn out chainring and likely worn out chain.

Either the chain is severely worn or the chainring is too wide for that chain.
> * Single speed chains have inner width of 1/8″ (3.175 mm).
> * Multi speed chains, from 5 to 8 have inner width of 3/32″ (2.38 mm).
> * Multi speed chains from 9 to 12 speeds have inner width of 11/128″ (2.18 mm).

The chain ring could be designed for an 8-speed chain and you have a narrower 12-speed chain.
