I found a great invention to solve the issue of not being able to use panniers with a child seat!

https://www.basil.com/en/lugage-carrier-extender-black.html

But now that I've ordered and installed it, I see that none of my current panniers will work and I need a double pannier. My single panniers all attach with the 3 clips system and I need one that attaches to the rack.

But I also have to take the panniers off the bike when I get to work. I suppose I don't have to, but I don't really feel like putting that to the test.

So I'm looking for advice for specifically double panniers that are quick to put on and off the bike and have some sort of carry handle or messenger strap.

My bike has and MIK rack but I'm not actually sure it works given that I've installed the extender. So I think it needs to be a universal system.

Thank you!!

  1. Back when I had a paper round, my panniers were stiffened on top of the rack and at the back of the back with thin plywood. If you threw it on, it could only slide back and forth, not side to side. That way, securing it with a strap around the seat post was enough to keep it in place.

  2. Loads high and outside the axles make unstable.

Those extenders are way behind the axle so especially when you already have a kid high and partially behind the axle  could make the bike  very unstable if heavily loaded.

So once you do figure out what panniers to use please dont heavily load them.

I prefer to use low rider panniers and a front basket to distribute weight around the bike and try to keep it towards the centre.
