The rubber has degraded. What it means is :

    – it won’t be as grippy as u’it used to be, especially in the wet

    – it won’t do its job of protecting the casing, which may fail prematurely.

It’s at the rear so I wouldn’t call it unsafe. But definitely monitor it closely to be able to catch any deformation of the casing before it rips apart.

Yes. Depends what you use the bike for. Is it just a quick trip to the shops once a week? You could get away with it? Do you use the bike a lot for commuting, weekend rides, etc? 100% get a new tyre.

  3. imagine this, you are operating a quick moving unstable machine at high speeds on surface with varying quality and characteristics, your only contact with it being two narrow pieces of rubber, the quality of which you just doubted. look for the answer within

  4. If it was on my road bike, I would move it to my fixed gear.

If it was on my fixed gear, I’d plan to ride it until I got a flat and then toss the tire.

Never skimp on things that sit between you and the ground – tyres, shoes and mattresses!

  7. On the back, you can run it till it explodes which might be soon.

On the front? No you will crash

I rode my Confidentials like this for about 100km as my new tires arrived. I got about 3 flats in that time … I’d get some new tires.

  9. If you’re referring to the cracked rubber then just spray paint it black. Spray paint has about the same level of structural importance as does rubber.
