Day 283. 57km (93,940kms 8yrs)

With a slightly fuzzy head (those beers were 8.5%!!) I set out into a sunny cold morning. At first the strong wind was behind me, but once I’d left town and my direction became more fixed to the west, the wind was now to my side. There was still frost on the ground – for now – but by late morning the rain began. At temperatures barely above zero I was quickly very chilled.

Needing a place to warm up and feeling compelled to try Belgian frîtes I stopped at a place called Maxi Frîtes which I guess is a fast food chain. I got a large chips with a couple of sauces; it was fine I guess. But I remain devoted to greasy fat English chips. At least I got a hot meal before continuing out into the horrible weather.

I had a bike path for most of the afternoon, and since my head was down into the wind it was handy not having to be conscious of traffic around me. It was dark by the time I arrived into the town of Tienen. Jan welcomed me with excellent Belgian beers and a magnificent macaroni cheese from the oven. Cosy, warm, and well-fed. Happy days

  3. As an American, I have to say it took me decades of living in Europe before I finally tried mayonnaise on my frites. Belgian frites….Belgian mayonnaise…..Wow! It's really great. I also like some of the Belgian and NL frite sauces. — Ketchup is boring. 🤣

  4. Argh, cycling in freezing rain is so horrible. Chills you right to the bone. That pasta dish along with the 9.5 beer will warm you up. Cheers! 🍻
