DAY 4: The day opened with one of the route’s toughest challenges: the climb up the Brünigpass, a demanding ascent on steep, especially on these wet gravel paths. The pass rewards the effort with sweeping views of the Wetterhorn and surrounding peaks, and the descent brings a striking contrast between picturesque Lake Lungern, over 200 metres higher than its neighbour, and the much larger, crystal-clear Lake Sarnen below, in the peaceful canton of Obwalden.

From Sarnen, the route opened up into a more flowing, scenic stretches.
Near Alpnachstad, the world’s steepest cogwheel railway has been climbing to Mount Pilatus since 1889.

And then the clear highlight of the day. The cycleway along the shores of Alpnachersee and the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) was spectacular, even with rain in the air, riding along those lake edges with the Alps as a backdrop made every kilometre worthwhile.

The lakeside path delivered a grand entrance into Lucerne, the sun returning just in time to illuminate the old town and the bustling waterfront, as busy and beautiful as ever. A city I have visited many times but never find tiresome, it marks the transition from Alpine drama to the calmer, rolling terrain of Central Switzerland. The final leg followed the Reuss River onward to Cham on Lake Zug, finishing the day.

About the Route
The route crosses Switzerland from Geneva to Rorschach, linking the country’s most iconic lakes. It’s one of the most scenic cycling routes in Europe, a mix of lakeside paths, quiet roads, and stunning landscapes that changes every few kilometres.
