  1. In 1975, Indian artist P. K. Mahanandia met Swedish traveler Charlotte von Schedvin while sketching portraits on the streets of Delhi. The two quickly fell in love despite their very different backgrounds and later married in India through a traditional ceremony in Odisha.

After Charlotte returned home to Sweden, PK faced a problem: he couldn’t afford a plane ticket. Determined to keep his promise, he sold many of his belongings, bought a second-hand bicycle, and set off in 1977 on an extraordinary journey. Over the next four months, he cycled more than 11,000 kilometers through countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, and parts of Europe, often earning food and shelter by drawing portraits. When he finally reached Sweden, Charlotte was waiting for him. The couple went on to build a life together and raise a family.
