Getting into bikepacking this year and think it’s time for a new rear tire. I’m currently running a Maxxis Agressor 2.5” which I love, but recently noticed that it is too wide for my frame and has been rubbing it down a bit. Especially when things get muddy! I love the 2.5” for the added comfort and traction but don’t want to put any more wear on my frame.

Ideally I’m looking for something that can still handle aggressive and technical trails(with and without my packs) but also crushes on longer distance rides.

I run the widest Thunder Burt on the back (29″) and the widest Rocket Ron on the front (20″).

In my rim sizes that means the front is 0.1 inches narrower than the rear. I wish it was even wider.

They are an absolutely great combination though. The front having slightly more grip than the rear, especially when cornering. The rear is supposedly Schwalbe’s fastest MTB tyre. Meaning it has much better grip than their gravel tyres

I would avoid their Billy Bonkers. I really disliked it on the rear as it felt like rolling off, and on the front I absolutely hated it due to its propensity to “pull” towards bulges and up uneven asphalt or hardpack.. I don’t want that in a front tyre.

Vittoria Mezcals? XC tire that comes in various sizes and seems to be fairly common, atleast on this side of the pond (EU)

Rekon 2.4 or Rekon Race 2.4

When I did the CT I ran a Rekon up front, Rekon Race 2.4 in back. Will do the same thing when I depart in 9 weeks from today.

What kind of rods you got with you? I decided I’m going to start bringing a fly rod on my trips (free food) also no issues with it slipping with the straps?
