I just came from a trip from my friends that live 250km away.
I wanted to test my gear in the wild. Especially the newboller rear rack bag that I bought recently.
My mistakes:
I brought too much food and water with me. I wasn't sure where I could refill my water on the way so I took 2 bottles 750ml and 2 bottles 1l, a hydration pack 2l.
I brought too much food. I wasn't able to eat everything and after a half day of riding I was sick of eating. I tried to eat light food, bananas, and sweet snacks.
My brakes got worn out in a single day and I took no brake pads with me. There were a lot of segments where I was going downhill over 50km/h.
I wanted to die and was about to pass out after going uphill over and over again.
I climbed around 3km up during that day. I should split the route in two days and go around, avoiding the huge hills.
The heat wasn't as much of an issue as I thought it would be.
Thinking about taking cooking gear, even if it adds some weight. Hot food is really easier to dig in than snacks or cold bread.
I'm looking for some good bag for my jack the rack. I used a small shopping bag that was good enough for this trip but I would prefer something more stable and nicer looking.
Water gets lukewarm very quickly even when it was frozen before and put into insulation bottles.
I would like to have a better rear light solution.

Sounds like a good trip with some valuable lessons. Onward and upward? 💪🏻 🚲
Good stuff. Never lean your bike that way though. Always peanut butter side up!
you’ll get better at packing with time
It’s likely your brakes were close to shot before leaving, 250km should not really cause much wear
A good habit is to go over your bike pre-trip – things will still go bad but less often
Rear light: did you look at the Garmin varia? Have one for years, was expensive but don’t regret it. I think the newer version can be paired to a phone, mine only connects to a gps.
How did you like the newboler bag?
As far as a “better” rear light situation – better in what way?
I have a Magicshine SeeMee 300, and if visibility on the road is what you’re wanting to be ‘better’ – it’s definitely eye catching. Plus built in braking light, auto shutoff, and can get a solid 20 hours out of a charge.
But why did you throw it into the ditch though?
