Yeah I got the metal version with the integrated cutter of this. Works great

You don’t strictly need one. I did a handful of barb fittings with a hammer and vice before I broke down and bought a tool. Just be careful.
If you’re doing a lot of fittings then absolutely get a tool.

I’ve typically been pretty happy with cutting the cable with a sharp knife and hammering in the Barb while gripping the hose with a set of hose blocks that came with a Shimano brake set many years ago. If you are doing lots of brakes then maybe get the tool to make it easier.

  4. The barb pusher will work fine, the hose cutter is dog shit if you’re working with anything that has Kevlar in it.

  5. you don’t need it to just insert a barb.
The yellow blocks, a vice grip, exacto blade and a hammer like object can work like a cutting guide and to push the insert in.
The tool works alright, if you are doing this kind of thing repeatedly, the cutter sucks, it can create a crooked cut. The bleeding cone being not translucent doesn’t help to see if bubles are coming up…

I had one and it did not work very well. The body was plastic and the screw part would slide in the body when trying to put pressure. If you are only going to do it once I would use the yellow clamps and tap it in. If you are going to do it repeatedly I would buy the right tool

I bought a similar one from Amazon and it works fine. It made clean cuts and pressed the barb in straight. Made the work simple without having to MacGyver a hack.

  8. Don’t get the plastic version (mine split in half on the bottom of the ‘vice’. And the needle is quite easy to break. Good luck!

  9. I got one, worked fine.
Can never remember where I put it and just fitting the barbs with pliers and a hammer takes less time than finding this tool so I just use pliers and a hammer, put it in the vice if the brakes are off the bike.

I spent too much money & bought the Park Tool version. I only use it a few times a year but it’s great and works flawless every time.

I figure it’s saved me a dozen trips to the shop.

  11. I have something similar from Amazon. I bought it after having no luck using a hammer-and-vice or a SRAM-branded one on Shimano tubing (it just slid through the clamp). Works better than the SRAM one since you can adjust the clamp pressure.

  12. I have exactly the same tool. It works pretty good. If you want to save money, order directly from China.

For the rare times I need it i use existing tools: hammer, knippex pliers wrench, yellow hose clamp that comes with a bleed kit.

For cutting the hose I stage a utility blade on the hose where I want the cut (perpendicular of course) then use the knippex to drive down the blade.

The knippex holds the hose clamp firmly in place well while I tap in the barb as well.

Gets a straight AF cut and no new specialty tools.

But that tool is cheaper than a [knippex 86 03 250](https://www.knipex-tools.com/products/pipe-wrenches-and-water-pump-pliers/pliers-wrenches/jaw-protectors-pliers-wrench/8603250)
