I just went on my first ever cycling ride and by the end my head was really hurting me. I bought this helmet at Dick’s and figured the $70 helmet that claims “universal fit” was a reliable move.

I do have a larger head but I do have it at its largest size via the adjuster in the back. Am I possibly wearing it wrong or do I have a non universal, abnormally large cranium?

  1. Headache can be caused by physical exercise, especially if intense. If the helmet generally fits and you don’t feel uncomfortable wearing it, it’s more likely that blood vessels in your head are not used to the increased blood pressure during intense exercise which then causes post workout headache

It shouldn’t be a tight fit, but it should be just a bit snug.

Do you find it tight? That is a perfectly fine helmet.

  3. Is it a general headache, or pain where the helmet touches the skin? If the latter, probably not the best helmet for you

I know personally I need a large or XL size helmet for my head. Smaller ones just don’t feel right.

  4. Can you clarify where on your head you are hurting? Is it your skin, or more like a headache? More info can help us speculate better!

If it’s clenching all the way around your head like a too tight hat brim you need to go up a helmet size. If it’s rubbing your chin and the top of your head it’s just the chin strap needs adjusting. If it’s rubbing one specific spot on your head you need to add foam pads, remove pads, or literally carve out a protruding bit of the hard foam that is rubbing/irritating (if you need to carve deeper than a sixteenth of an inch it’s the wrong size helmet.
