Cyrille Guimard Was Right About Greg LeMond…But Nobody Listened

Cyrille Guimard coached Bernard Hinault to five Tours de France. He knew exactly what a great champion looked like. Then Greg LeMond arrived — and Guimard saw something the entire peloton missed. Not just a talented rider. The first modern cyclist. This is what he tried to tell cycling. And why nobody listened.

  1. Very insightful video. I learned a lot from Guimard's perspective. And my respect and admiration for LeMond increased (it was already quite high). Kudos Greg!

  2. Lemond led the way for lancie lance, the twirp. And US riders afterwards. Of concentrating on the tour de France. As the only thing that mattered. Alienating the rest of the European peloton and fans alike at the time. To the point where during the introduction for Discovery Channel team, Armstrong was asked about his plans for the upcoming season, his reply the tour de France! Asked about the spring classics? no! Paris – Roubaix no! Tour of Flanders? I don't understand those races!

So for me, who grew up in the Merckx, Moser, Freddy Maertens, Sarroni era, he was a disappointment to say the least. And as far as I'm concerned, Lemonds greatest moment is the world championship in 89, and the sprint finish with Dimitri Konischev, and Sean Kelly. Plus how many monuments did Lemond win? Paris-Nice? Paris – Roubaix, Milan-Sanremo? Fignon took Milan – Sanremo twice! Fleche Wallone, Plus many top podiums in the classics. Post lance the twirp era, cycling has returned to the idea of the best being able to take the one day races as important as the grand tours.
