Hi everyone, I'm trying to choose between these 2 bikes – an early 90s rigid Specialized Rockhopper with a chromoly steel frame, or a much newer Dawes Galaxy with a Reynolds 631 steel frame.

Primary use is going to be a trip from Albania to Milan over summer, predominately on EuroVelo routes. I'd also want to use it for future cycle trips, possibly in areas with rougher roads like parts of Asia and South America. I'll also use it for commuting in between trips, so it needs to be capable on UK roads, canal paths, some gravel etc.

Also worth mentioning that I already own the Rockhopper, it's in decent condition but been sat for years. Would need wheels trued, a pannier rack, and maybe a couple other small upgrades to run really well. I can buy the Galaxy from a mate for £300, but its's barely ridden and ready to go.

  1. Well these bikes are vastly different sizes, I’d look into what would fit you best.

That said, that Dawes for that price is a steal and will serve you for all your touring needs as is, and extremely well. If it fits.

Those are two very different bikes. I think it comes down to your handlebar and shifter preference. One thing to note: you might find the bar end shifters on the Dawes annoying

Also the Rockhopper will have clearance for wider tyres. If you do end up riding gravel roads you’ll probably want that. From what I heard UK gravel roads would be more accurately named mud roads

  3. The second bike looks more reliable. I would pick that one. Looks like it will hold your kit easier. If you want to save 200 dollars pick the first one , but you may have to do a bit of upgrading to it.
