This week’s compilation features a selection of workshop repairs, starting with a Carrera e-bike that might be the dirtiest machine to ever cross the threshold. It arrived with brakes worn down completely to the backing plates, a jumping chain, and a thick layer of caked mud obscuring the components.

After a serious clean-up, we tackle a standard lower leg service on a RockShox fork, repair a smashed Carrera rear derailleur that found its way into the spokes, and use two different methods to revive a set of sticky 35-year-old Shimano Rapidfire shifters.

E-Bike Resuscitation: Deep cleaning a Carrera e-bike, replacing spent rotors and pads with EBC components, and installing a new chain.

RockShox Lower Leg Service: Dropping the lowers, replacing the foam rings and dust wipers using Unior seal drivers, and replenishing the lower leg oil bath.

Smashed Derailleur Recovery: Replacing a sheared derailleur hanger, a twisted chain, and a broken rear mech on a classic teenage-ridden Carrera.

Retro Shifter Revival: Demonstrating how to use flush lubricants and a heat gun to melt 35 years of petrified grease inside old Shimano Rapidfire pods.

  1. That old Raeigh, makes a change to see a 35 year old bike that's not rusty! I did spot the stem was too high. I could see the min insertion marks @ 28:59. Also nice to see your furry comrade 🙂

  2. Now I'm with the experts … im toying with the idea of building a china carbon bike. The best geometry frame i can find is one with fully internal cabling. Will that work with 105 mechanical shifting? It claims to be mech compatible (Airwolf yfr066)
Other question, another interesting frame is a "gravel" type. With a front derailleur hanger on it. Is there a real risk i won't be able to put dual chainwheels on that (not clearing the chainstay)(Airwolf yfr056)?
    Thanks!

  3. It looks like the bike had been covered in a thick layer of plaster or concrete dust. I'd done that by mistake when I began a project to resurface my basement floor and didn't use a dustless shroud + shop vac for the job. Concrete dust got EVERYWHERE. They didn't last long like that, though; once I cleared out the air, I gave them a good clean (a.k.a., going for a ride on a rainy day).

  4. I like how you low key educate rather than berate your customers. People are more receptive to 'correction' and advice if its delivered in a non-judgmental way.

  5. I would be so embarrassed to take my bike to a shop looking like that, i always make sure mine is clean it is respect to the shop, if it was me i would tell them clean it and bring it back

  6. My cheapo bike has a guard – the bicycle I want to buy however doesn't have the correct holes to put one on, so guess the next bicycle won't have one. But, then I do have and use my kickstand – not sure what the whole trend of removing (or just not having one) is all about, but seems dumb to not have one to me.

  7. I worked for a bike shop for a few months and some bikes were horrible to work on and needed a wash before touching anything. I´m used to clean all my bikes, even the commuter bike. Commuter bikes are by far the dirtiest bikes out there, average owner never clean the bike and just adds whatever junk lube to the chain. Used to work around hi end enduro and dh bikes, those you can touch the bike no globes.
