Thought I'd share since it made me feel less stupid seeing people talk about this on year (it was 7 years ago though). Could of been worse apparently people have lost some fingertips because of this.
Maybe detach your chain before cleaning it ? I will

I was real embarrassed after a cog snatch too. My buddy saw my cut and bandage asking what had happened. I told him the chain almost ate my finger. He responded, yeah it happens to us all.
My buddy was riding years before me and had more experience in bikes overall being a bike tech. Him saying that it happens to him from time to time, reassured me a bit.
Instead of spinning the cranks your spin the wheel. Less leverage = safer cleaning of chain.

What do you mean lost fingertips?!😉🫣
*frayed rag, leaned over drivetrain on porch to look up street after finishing lubing chain and had done the classic pedal spin to give drivetrain chance to spin right before.
Homie, next time uninstall the whole chain. It’s a bit tedious but safer.
