45km
For the first time on this trip, I woke up to the sound of drizzle on my tent. The precipitation didn’t last very long…but it was a hint of what was to come… In my slumber and while having my morning coffee and breakfast in my tent, I managed to find availability at a hostel in the centre of Dresden…perfect as I wanted to do another walking tour the next day as the one in Prague was great!
As the goal that day was to get to Dresden, and it being only 45 km’s away, I took my time getting prepared for that ride.
After a quick stop to once again thank my camping neighbours for their generosity, I made my way to the camp office, paid for my stay, then set off by just after 11am.
Rode into Altenberg to see if there was an outdoor activity store where I could buy some concentrated soap…and I found a store, but not the soap…so I bought an expensive cup of coffee, then headed off in the direction that Google Maps bicycle route suggested. It was the first time since getting to the Czech Republic that I was able to use the bicycle route option on GM’s, as it’s not supported in the Czech Republic for some reason.
I followed the “fastest” route advised for about 15km’s. It was a lovely change from the busy roads I’d been riding since leaving Germany, however although the general grade was certainly down, the GM route was more of a roller coaster.
As I continued north, I could see the gathering of rain clouds in the distance, so I decided to take a short cut off of the prescribed route and follow busy and largely shoulder less route 170 so as to have access to cover should the rain start falling…and it eventually did, when I was in a supermarket on the outskirts of Dresden. Fortunately it was a brief shower…unfortunately, I was not parked under an overhang…
The ride into the centre of Dresden followed bike paths of one sort or another.
After a brief stop in the old town, I continued across the Elbe River into the new town…and after some zig zagging along several streets, I arrived at my hostel…and what a nice hostel it was!
Spent the rest of the evening getting to know the area and researching routes going north towards the Baltic.
