We set out with one clear job: get over the Brenner Pass. Preferably without being washed off the mountain. The climb serves rain, a surprise helping of gravel, and just enough drama to keep things interesting. Still, there is roadside applause, a hard-earned “Brenner” sign, and the quiet thrill of rolling into Italy as the clouds finally start to loosen their grip.
We celebrate properly with a latte macchiato and apple strudel, parked in front of the Europabrücke, an absurd ribbon of motorway floating high above the valley like a dare from the 1960s.
And then, ten kilometres from Bruneck, the real plot twist arrives. A sharp crack. No shifting. A snapped cable. Two bike shops. One complicated hub. Zero help.

Thank you for sharing this inspiring bike ride. It always saddens me to see cycle tourists on modern bikes suffering repeated breakdowns. For that reason alone, I swear by vintage high-end bikes, which are particularly recognisable by their V-brakes (rim brakes). Fingers crossed, and I can’t wait to see what happens next! Bon voyage!

Echt benieuwd hoe U het oplost…. Ik rij ook Rohloff en nog nooit geen probleem gehad. Maar wat niet is kan komen! Nog maar eens een super mooie video. Ik vermeed trouwens de Brenner als ik van Kroatië kwam door de Taurntunnel te nemen (een 8 tal KM ) met de trein. Maar volgend jaar staat hij normaal wel op het menu.

Ik heb de Brenner autobahn nog zien bouwen in 1968. Er waren toen urenlange files op de oude weg. En ja, Oostenrijk wordt niet zomaar De pispot van Europa genoemd hè. Tot slot: steeds reservekabels meenemen op zo een reis!
I think Leen's saddle is a little too high for her build. The excessive sway of her hip as she peddles prevent her from putting full power to each step.
