Hi all — looking for some advice from people with more experience than me.

I’m trying to decide between the Trek FX 1 Gen 4 ($699) and the Trek FX 2 Gen 4 ($899).

I’m completely new to cycling and honestly still learning the basics (did a lot of riding when I was in my teens). I’m around 270 lbs currently (actively losing weight), and this bike would mainly be used for paved trails, casual rides with family, fitness, and maybe some light gravel paths here and there.

I tried finding something used on Facebook Marketplace first, but I haven’t had much luck finding the right size locally.

The Trek dealer recommended the FX2, but I also asked about the FX1. From what I understand, the main differences seem to be the brakes, gearing/components, and the fork material — but I don’t really know how much those differences matter in real-world use for someone at my level.

For someone in my situation, is the FX2 worth the extra $200, or would the FX1 be more than enough? I’d really appreciate any insight or firsthand experience.

The hydro brakes alone is worth the 200 bucks. Get the two and save yourself headaches with mechanical disc brakes in the future.
