  1. I have succeeded to install those by hand, but they can be very tight depending on the rim design.

  2. I don’t remember gators being extraordinarily hard to put on. Thumb shredders sometimes sure, but not abnormally difficult. These days my 23mm gp5ks seem like a pain. But yeah just technique and white knuckling it sometimes

Went to the Philly bike expo & even a frame builder admitted that they were absurdly difficult to mount

    1. It helps to “pull” the tire towards the spot where the bead isn’t on. Essentially sliding more material towards the opening. Even 1mm of movement can help.

    2. You CAN permanently ruin your tread by stretching the sidewalls if you aren’t careful. It is less likely to happen to a gatorskin than a fat 32-35mm tire, but i’ve accidentally introduced a wobble into a tire by muscling it on. Beware.

I think it’s all about technique. There’s a couple of good YouTube videos out there on how to do it.

I’ve replaced 3 pairs of gatorskins, all by hand. Not much to it.

  6. 👍Always by hand for my quiver but some rims can definitely be challenging

i’ve had zero issues with gators, mavic open pro, cxp33 (i think they have a different name now), velocity

I install Continental GP5000s by hand with no tools. It looks to me like the person in the video actually did it the hard way. It is much easier to push the tyre into the V in the rim, work it around to the other side, and then slip the final bit over the rim. Easy peasy.

Dunno I’ve always done gators by hand. The real thing is just making sure you don’t pinch the tube.
