Hello,

As the title says, I am new to road cycling and am looking to get into it a lot more. I am coming from mountain biking, but after moving to a bigger city I would really like to switch. I am currently looking for a road bike under $1,000, and found an XDS AD300 20spd. I know the X-Labs are great, and although they're sweet bikes, it's definitely out of budget right now lol. Anyway, is this a good bike to start with? Or does anyone have any recommendations?

Where are you generally located in the world?

Let’s assume you’re in ‘murica, cause that’s how we roll generally on the Worldwide Web…. Everyone is ‘murican until proven otherwise. ….

For that amount of $$$ you can get on Facebook marketplace and find a bicycle made by a reputable bicycle company, with serviceable parts. Giant, Fuji, Specialized, Trek, etc. … Something with Shimano or SRAM components, maybe 3-5 years old … It’s been leaning against the garage wall since COVID and never really put any miles on….and they’d rather put the cash towards new tires for their lifted truck, or towards extra Dubai Chocolate cause TikTok told them to. … Offer them 20% below asking price and they’ll jump on it like a stripper on Elon.

  2. XDS makes a bike for UCI Pro team Astana, but it’s definitely not this model. They are the only Chinese bike on the men’s UCI tour. But China is making some really great bikes these days so don’t let that deter you. I guess it depends if you are just a casual rider are wanting to be something more serious.

  3. If price is an issue I recommend checking the used marketplace and stick to the major brands, trek, giant, specialized, bmc, etc. Same with components, sram or Shimano. You should be able to find a gently loved 2×11 with 105 and disc brakes right around 1K.

  4. Xds is one of the most popular bikes in China, I see their shops and their bikes everywhere here but you’re paying a much higher price than in China, those bikes cost ~400usd new, and in China you’d have much better support if anything goes wrong. It should be a solid bike though.

XDS is owned/made by Shenzhen Xidesheng Bicycle Co., Ltd…for the past 30 years they’ve supplied bikes to a few major brads…what those brands are is undisclosed.

The only thing I’d have issue with is the L-Twoo components. They are supposedly giant killers, offering at a lower cost features found on higher end components. They’ve only been around since 2016 or so.

Like others have said, you could check FB marketplace for a known brand name like Specialized with Shimano or Sram components. Maybe even Campagnolo.

  6. I was just on the XDS website and do not see that frame listed. Also, that website XDSBikesCo doesn’t seem to be the actual XDS company. Maybe I’m wrong, but figured I’d point that out.

  7. XDS and Ltwoo are good brands, but this is still a pretty low end offering. It is probably adequate and definitely not junk, but probably not so good as to be what I would term “solid”.
