The chain goes slack when backpedaling. It really becomes an issue when Im just rolling with the food in the pedals, and the chain is just slack slapping against the frame. Have had this bike for several months and now my chain is doing this.

Since this video, I’ve cleaned the chain, sprockets, derailleur and tensioner. It seems most likely the tensioner? It rides and shift gears just fine tho.

Help! Is my tensioner broken?

Does the tensioner want to be open, (swing down and backwards) when removed from chain, the middle part is fixed with a fastener has that come loose?

That doesn’t look like a tensioner issue.

Looks like the hub is just not turning backwards.

Did you tighten the skewer too tight?

That looks like a hub that isn’t freewheeling properly. When you backpedal when stationary or when you are freely rolling on it, are you getting a grinding sensation? If so, hub might need some attention.

I have this right now on my BWR hub; LBS say it’s a dead hub. Or, rather, the hub is past economical service. I’m sure if I could be bothered I could strip the hub down and recondition/relube etc. but what’s my time worth? Unfortunately it looks like Brompton have discontinued production of the BWR hub 🙁

I sometimes get a similar issue caused by the upper wheel (closer to the cassette) of my tensioner being a bit sticky. A bit of 3 in 1 oil generally helps.
