Curious, I am looking at a car and looking through some used car videos it's due a timing belt change based on milage (that hasn't been done) would you haggle the cost of it off of the car if similar aged and milage vehicles which had it done were similarly priced?
I was shocked and surprised today when I took my Dad to look at a VW Polo at the local main dealership. This was a 2019 model and had done 32000 miles and the asking price was £13600. My Dad was told that they would give him £6500 for his Renault Captur of the same year and mileage against the Polo. He seemed OK with this. I then asked about the MOT which is up in 2 months and was told they would not put a new 12 month MOT on the vehicle. It was their policy to not include a full MOT if the MOT was older than 6 months. I could see from an online car check that there was just one advisory last MOT of a dust cover on a ball joint being split but nothing else. But that does not mean a fault or faults had not developed since then which may not be covered by their 12 month warranty they were offering with the vehicle. Even cars I have bought in the past for a couple of thousand came with a new 12 month MOT! Not sure if we should go ahead and buy it or insist that if we do they put a new MOT on it.
Maybe it’s a silly question but, can you take the car you might be buying for a test drive if you are not insured on that car? Or has the owner have to come with you (in that case, are they driving?).

Some adverts say tax paid, so this will not cover the buyer I guess and the seller can claim any tax if they paid yearly for example?

Belated comment. What does someone like me do? Even though I am getting on (72) I still know nothing about cars used or otherwise and am now looking for what will probably be my last car. I don’t know anyone who could help me either.
I have been looking incessantly to buy a used car since July 2025 and, by using channels such as your excellent Youtube I have narrowed it down, I think, to Honda CRV 😅, Škoda Karoq, Kia Sportage or Audi Q3 and 4 wheel drive would be great., because I might move back from Shropshire to Scotland.
The problem is I only have a 15K budget and have a 2012 Škoda Superb to try and trade. On top of that I have been badly stung numerous times in the past (one car went on fire, another drive shaft broke, another clutch needed replacing etc), so I dare not use Auto Trader etc. I don’t really trust dealers any more which leaves me in a real quandary, because you have to go to them eventually.
I am sure there are thousands of people like me who would consider paying someone to source a car a do a deal for a fee.
Any polite suggestions 😊😂 would be gratefully received.

Going to find a branch of your bank is a bit of a joke these days. You’ll be lucky to find one too close by. This vid was a year ago and the situation has worsened in the intervening time.
Something worth thinking about is doing a diagnostic check. It’s something you can do yourself or get done at a garage. You can check the mileage on the ECU as well as for any hidden faults. This is a must, especially with an ex lease as clocking of those is rife (sic).
How to deal with insurance after bought a car… you need to insure in place online before you drive home after bought a car or you can drive with excuse 😅 Or there's conditions between forms please?
