  1. Crashes usually make for great/comedic stories later. Is that a Misfits shirt?

You look new. Welcome! Please, I cannot emphasize this enough, please level your cranks when coasting. There’s a natural tendency people have to put one foot down and one up, it’s easy on your hips, it makes your bottom pedal closer to objects and makes for an unstable core platform because your legs are at different extension. Every new rider has this habit so don’t feel bad. Having level cranks also allows you to take some weight off your saddle, which will “eject” you less over unanticipated large bumps and roots.

“Light hands, heavy feet”. You want to push on your feet a LOT even when not pedaling. It is unlike riding a bike on the road. It’s more like riding a horse, to some degree.
