I recently decided on a whim that I wanted to get into MTB. I watched a bunch of videos, compared a bunch of brands and ended up with a Stumpjumper 15 Coil.

Can't wait to get into the trails.

I tried taking it for a ride around the neighborhood and I burned out in like 6 minutes. Tried again later on the same day same result. The next day my butt burned out in 3 or so min and my legs were burning.

My office job has turned me to mush lol, it will probably be a while before I am "Trail Ready", even beginner trails. If my butt and legs burn out in 5 to 10 min, I need to do some endurance training a bit first.

Hoping this will whip me into shape, and after 15 years of doing nothing but going to the office and going home. I hope to see some of the world. I plan on traveling with my bike, maybe even leaving country.

Whatever comes, for the first time in a long time I'm actually looking forward to the future!

  1. Quite the first ride for 6 min burnout! Have fun keep at it! Update us when there is some dirt on it.

Your body will make significant improvements fast. Go on a 30 min trail and walk some you have to. A week in you’ll be doing the full 30

  3. Damn dude, what an entry into the sport, on a whim! Thats some high roller status, lol. Enjoy!

  4. That’s a pretty serious piece of hardware for a first bike. Do you have a motocross background, or just sinister intentions?

Buying a brand new enduro rig for “beginner trails” that you aren’t even riding yet is crazy work. Did you even research anything about bike categories?

  6. If you are struggling, you may be using too high or even too low of a gear.

  7. Things to help the legs if you’re only riding on the road while you build strength. 1. Add more are to your tires. 2. Stiffen your spring rate so less pedal bob. 3. Work on shifting through gears to get used to the change.

The first two should be changed back to softer once you get on dirt and start feeling more comfortable.

More time on the bike the better, nothing beats time even if it hurts a bit. Might look into the specialized Power Saddle if the tailbones are still hurting after a couple weeks.

Yeah, this bike was a ‘pick me’ purchase, no offense. Great if you’ve got the $$, but you’re now (literally) sitting on $4k bike that you don’t even know how to ride — sounds like you don’t know how to ride in the proper gear. Also, was your bike set up properly?

If you’re sticking with the SJC, simply riding the bike more will normally get your butt used to the seat. There’ll be soreness and discomfort at first as you’re using muscles you don’t normally use. But more time in the saddle will get you where you need to be.

You might want to also get something else for getting into shape first, less aggressive angle and more upright with a 50/52 tooth granny gear

That’s going to suck trying to chug uphill if you have zero fitness and no experience doing actual mtb riding.

You don’t want to get burned out on the sport before you really get going or even injure yourself. I was in the same boat and that’s what worked for me.
