    It needs to have the proper tension on the belt. Park makes a tool for it. If I had to guess, it’s too tight.

    Check belt alignment and then tension. The belt alignment is really critical or the belt will fail pretty fast. Gates has a pdf to tell you what the beltline should be and it’s critical with that trash square-taper crank they put on bikes. Those things are awful and they are soft and fail frequently. The s300 is marginally better, though it uses the FSA interface and the bearings don’t last long, either.

    Get an Alfine crank and Shimano bottom bracket and make sure the beltline is correct (you may have to play with flipping the beltring and putting it on the inside or the outside of the crankarms), but once done, set and forget for years. I hate that Gates has these trash cranks that don’t preserve the beltline and the square taper wears out because the material is incredibly soft, but I guess this is just a starter crank with their cost being about 40 Euros with the BB. Enjoy the cranks falling off one day.

    Anyway, I am betting there’s a combination problem of the alignment and too-low tension. The people giving advice as if this is a chain are exposing they have no idea how this works. The beltline at the hub has to be identical to the beltline at the crank so the belt is perfectly straight. It won’t matter if pedaling forwards or backwards. If the belt is having issues staying on the rings and cog, then it is out of alignment and the tension is incorrect.
