On this ride, I cycled to the beautiful seaside town of Sidmouth. Along the way I traveled many new roads, country lanes and cycle paths.
I made an effort to navigate most of this route using the available cycle paths. However, that didn’t go to plan, as I quickly learned that motorists were not adhering to rule H3 of the Highway Code.
H3 is where cyclists have priority when travelling on a cycle path or road etc, over vehicles wishing to turn into or out of the junction a cyclist is crossing.
One motorist literally went into a rage by throwing a missile (full can of can of cola at me) when they were forced to stop as I crossed in front of them.
This video has highlighted the dangers involved for cyclists who are taking advantage of the Highway Code hierarchy, to be very cautious at junctions.
My observations are the subject of this ride. So come along and enjoy another great cycling adventure.

  1. I appreciate this is part of the highway code, but I choose to ignore this and leave cars alone at junctions like this. There are too many drivers oblivious to the change. Bristol traffic is not good for this.

  2. H Harvey, I entirely agree, some motorists still totally ignorant of H3. Two days ago, on an A-road for a short distance. My mate in front about 25m ahead. I ride behind as I've got Varia radar with camera and wear Pass Pixie. Car came by me with close pass (about 1m, at approx. 40mph) then braked took a left turn in front of my mate. Thankfully mate had slowed as we were turning left. Clearly this driver desperate to get in front of us, ten seconds later could have made a safe pass.

  3. Just because they have four wheels and a metal box around them, some drivers think the law does not apply. i recently had a car pass extremely close, less than an inch to spare, fortunately for me, but not the motorists, the unmarked police car following took a dim view, it was nice to see the lights come on as he passed me and quarter of a mile down the road both vehicles stopped in a layby with the driver of the first car getting talked to. Another great video, with great views of our lovely area. With sping approaching i hope to get out and ride more. Looking forward to the next video.

  4. Great video and those views from the bad track were lovely. More car driver education is required, parking in cycle lanes is another issue for cyclists. Cars and roundabout up here in Milton Keynes (the city of roundabouts) are a nightmare for other car who know the rules let alone cyclists .

  5. Thanks for sharing the nice ride and views. Here in Texas where I ride, they are posting signs at intersections: "Turning vehicles yield to pedestrians and bikes."

  6. Great ride Dave 🚴👍there is always one knob in a car that doesn’t no the highway code 🤦🏻‍♂️love the ride pal stunning.keep up the great videos .stay safe mate 🚴👍

  7. Sadly shame can lead to rage and violence. Even drivers who know they are wrong will lose face in public and lash out. Google shame and violence together.

  8. I would never cross that junction as a cyclist unless the road was clear as it is not marked with a special colour road surface. It is my opinion that most cycle paths should be part of the road not a bloody path beside it. I hate them as a cyclist, pedestrian & a driver. These junctions are so dangerous.

  9. The drivers should be giving way to you at that junction, but the problem is, everything about the junction design suggests that cars on the road have the priority. At a minimum, we need to change the road markings at junctions to show cyclists and pedestrians have the priority. Without this, nothing is ever going to change.

  10. hope you reported that nobb in the car.btw what was that guy doing standing in the middle of cycle path lol.Only on a bike.great ride great scenery.

  11. Missile is a bit facetious, but i get the point. But Also this is why i rarely use bike lanes. These interactions with other road users at intersection are always sub par. Whereas if I was already on the road I am able to go straight through with ease. It shouldn't be this way but, it's a "cars" world. Honestly would love to move to amsterdam

  12. This is why I take the lane. Sidewalks are for walking mostly! I don't care about laws, codes, or rules. I do what keeps me safe.

    ~Long live the solar tour!

  13. Hey , the cycle track in this video is part of the Exeter City cycling network E4. This links a new town to the city to encourage residents to commute by bicycle. The trouble however is, most T junctions are designed with a sweeping curve so vehicles can enter at speed! Therefore, the updated version of the Highway Code has actually made junctions like this more dangerous. Rules H2 and H3 gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists going ahead, whether they are in a cycle lane, cycle track, on the road or a footpath. Vehicles must give way if they are turning into or out of that junction. This rule works perfectly well in other countries around the world. The trouble is that here in the UK, we are not all on the same page, because the government has failed to do any campaigning to highlight the updated Highway Code rules. Motorists could be fined upwards of £2,500 for not adhering to the rules. I didn’t report any of these drivers because I wanted to highlight this rule, and hopefully pedestrians, cyclists don’t get hurt and motorists don’t get prosecuted. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻⚡️🚴🏻‍♂️

  14. That's the junction of the B3174 (OLD A30) and the Station Road to Broadclyst near here. I've cycled along there many times, starting well before the road was widened and the cycle path added.
I have yet to use the crossing point over Station Rd, I get on the road itself before, take primary position at the junction, then back on the path afterwards.
Like a great many such facilities it's main purpose seems more to get vunerable road users out of the way rather than actually encourage active travel!
