Switzerland has officially transformed an abandoned underground tunnel in Zurich into the Stadttunnel, a futuristic 440 meter cycling route designed entirely for bicycles. Originally left unused for decades after a failed motorway project, the tunnel has now been redeveloped with a 30 million dollar investment into a high speed bike connection between Districts 4 and 5. The project includes more than 1,100 bicycle parking spaces with direct access to train platforms, along with bike washing stations and repair workshops, making it one of the most advanced cycling infrastructures in Europe. The tunnel is also expected to save commuters around 180,000 hours of travel time every year.
